Senior Wellness
One of the most important things we do is encourage preventative well care, this is especially true for our clients with older pets. Old age is not a disease - it is a natural process that includes a variety of changes that can affect your pet's quality of life. By identifying changes early, we have a much better chance of keeping your pet as healthy as possible for as long as possible.
For example, we can recommend changes in your pet's diet which can significantly lengthen and improve your pet's quality of life.
While healthy adult pets should be examined at least once a year to evaluate their weight, skin, teeth as well as the other major organs older pets should be examined at least twice a year. Since older pets are at increased risk for problems in these areas. Always remember the earlier we can detect a problem, the more we can do to minimize the effect.
The risk of problems such as obesity, heart or kidney disease can be reduced by adjusting your pet's diet with age. Some diseases such as thyroid or adrenal gland problems need specific medications and close monitoring to make sure your pet stays healthy. It is particularly important to check your older pet's dental health since older pets can have difficulty fighting off infections such as tooth abscesses.
DIAGNOSTIC LABORATORY TESTING
Newport Center Animal Hospital offers the advantage of an extremely well equipped IN-HOUSE LABORATORY to help diagnose illness and provide you with immediate answers. Since most samples do not need to be sent to an outside lab to be performed or interpreted, critical patients can be evaluated immediately. Our well equipped laboratory provides fast and reliable laboratory results. Serious conditions, including anemia, diabetes and electrolyte imbalance can be diagnosed within minutes. In house testing allows our doctors to diagnose serious conditions immediately so that specific treatment can be started without delay.
Our laboratory equipment also allows us to obtain important, current pre-anesthetic information prior to surgery. Pre-surgical blood work can be performed on the same day, eliminating an extra trip to the hospital. Pre-anesthetic diagnostic testing can greatly reduce the risks associated with anesthesia and surgery.
For more extensive diagnostic tests, we have quick access to a REFERENCE LABORATORY that provides timely results we access via email.
PHARMACY
We carry a full line of the latest veterinary pharmacology. After our veterinarian diagnoses your pet’s illness, he will prescribe the most appropriate medication while you wait. This is extremely convenient to our clients, as medications can be dispensed before leaving the hospital. The Newport Center Animal Hospital pharmacy assures your animal's medication needs are taken care of while at the hospital, and after discharge.
SURGERY
Our hospital is well equipped to perform most minor and major surgical procedures from spays and neuters to more complicated emergency surgery.
Prior to each surgery, each patient receives a thorough physical examination to identify any existing medical condition that may endanger your pet’s health. We then carefully place an IV catheter and start your pet on fluids to insure adequate hydration.
Because not all problems can be detected on examination, we do require pre-anesthetic blood tests. These tests give us a more complete picture of your pet’s health and help assure us that your pet will metabolize the anesthesia well. Remember, you’re placing your pet in our care and we take that responsibility very seriously. Since every effort is made to help your pet feel secure and comfortable during each step of the procedures, we administer a pre-anesthetic injection to help your pet relax.
Every surgery is done with strict sterility standards. Your pet’s vital signs during anesthesia will be closely observed through the use of a pulse oximeter, respiratory monitor, cardiac monitor, as well as the constant attentive eye of the surgical technician.
Pain management is an important part of our pre-operative, intra-operative and post-operative anesthetic and medical protocol. Immediately following the surgery, your pet will receive an injection for pain to minimize discomfort. In some cases, we will also dispense an at-home pain management medication.
Finally, your pet will recover under the care of the surgical technician. We realize you are concerned for you pet and are anxious to know how he’s doing. Once your pet is fully recovered, we will call you to let you know the surgery is complete so you can relax.
LASER SURGERY
Most of us are familiar with laser surgery. We feel the application of laser surgery in veterinary medicine offers incredible advantages. This advanced technology allows our veterinarians greater control and helps our patients heal faster and with less discomfort.
ULTRASOUND PROCEDURES
Ultrasound is a non-invasive technique for assessing anatomy and pathology. High-frequency sound waves produced from a hand held device are used to fully examine internal organs. Ultrasound examination is completely painless and generally can be performed using no sedation or anesthesia. Abdominal ultrasound has revolutionized the study of liver disease and is crucial to treating many types of cancer. Unlike conventional x-rays, which can be harmful if used excessively, evidence shows that ultrasound is free from these side-effects. Ultrasound is the best means to evaluate fluid filled and soft tissue organs. Simply put, ultrasound allows us to see the internal structure of many organs.
RADIOLOGY
We offer state-of-the-art digital radiology that produces outstanding radiographs. Radiographs are extremely helpful for diagnosing and monitoring many medical and surgical problems. Having the ability to digitally enhance the finished radiographs gives the veterinarian a tool to “zoom in” on specific areas without having to re-take the radiographs. We’re also able to send the radiograph directly to the computer monitors in our exam rooms so we can review them directly with you. A picture truly is worth a thousand words.
ARTHIRTIS: What ELSE can be done about it?
Stem Cell Regenerative Medicine utilizes an innovative process where stem cells are collected from body fat, isolated and injected into a damaged body part to handle healing. The only approved use at this point is for arthritis (which can be due to hip or elbow dysplasia for example) or damaged ligaments. There are exciting studies on the way for use in auto immune disease, liver, heart or kidney disease.
I took a credentialing course to become trained in doing this procedure. My interest in this procedure is that it permits an alternative to major surgery and potentially harmful long term pain killers to handle the common but painful condition I see so frequently in practice: arthritis. I know how distressing it is as a pet owner to see your friend limp and know that he or she is in pain continually.
Displaying pain is not a pro survival thing to do if you are a dog or a cat. In the wild, an animal that shows pain is very likely to soon be killed. So by the time you notice that your pet is in pain, he has been suffering for quite some time and no longer can hide his symptoms. Some conditions (like a torn ligament in a knee) can be repaired surgically. In other cases, all that can be done is provide some relief by chronic use of pain killers.
Stem Cell Regenerative Medicine provides an alternative solution to pain killers and in some cases even to surgery. Unlike drug use, there are no possible adverse effects from the use of the cells because they come from your dog’s own body. No possible toxic effects and no possible rejection. They come from a renewable source (fat). The only possible complications that can arise are the same as any minor surgery: seroma (fluid accumulation) at the site of the fat collection and infections. But both of those complications can usually be avoided with proper precautions.
The worst that can happen (aside for the minor complications mentioned above) is that minimal improvement will be noted. The best that can happen (and this is the case for many patients) is that your dog will be like a puppy again!
The procedure goes like this: The pet comes in one day for a minor surgical procedure to collect a fat sample from his body. He is put under general anesthesia, surgically prepped, the fat is aseptically collected, put in a special container and sent to a lab where the fat is processed to isolate the stem cells. The stem cells are put in a syringe and sent immediately back to the veterinarian. The next day, the pet comes back in for a minor sedation so that the stem cells can be injected directly in the affected joint(s). If the lab has been able to isolate cells in excess of what is needed for the procedure, the extra cells can be frozen and stored for years in case they are needed some time in the future, possibly avoiding another surgery to collect more stem cells.
How long do the beneficial effects of the procedure last? Nobody really knows at this point. In some cases, a year or two. Some pets who have undergone the procedure two years ago are still running and jumping. The procedure is fairly new (it has been used for maybe 2 years on dogs), so we don’t have the benefit of looking back 5 or 10 years at cases to see if they are still arthritis free.
For more information regarding the procedure and its exciting new developments, please visit the Vet-Stem website at www.vet-stem.com.
At Newport Center Animal Hospital, we have the privilege and potential to routinely use this exciting procedure that is not even currently commonly used in humans and be the pioneers of tomorrow’s medicine! Please don’t hesitate to call us if you would like to see how your pet can benefit from this.
DROP OFF SERVICES
On occasion, it might be easier to drop your pet off on your way to work for minor medical treatment. This is a great option to a fixed appointment if you find yourself short on time. Our receptionist or veterinary technician will take complete information from you to help our doctor in his examination. Once your pet has been evaluated by our veterinarian, we will call you and discuss his or her needs with you. Rest assured your pet will be well cared for in our clean, spacious treatment room and ready for you to pick up at a pre-arranged time that is convenient for you.
